Panama Canal Best Neighborhoods

Surrounded by Nature

The Panama Canal Zone was a former United States’ territory granted

by Panama for the administration and protection of the canal. By 1999,

US troops left the country but their green and beautifully planned townships

and military installations remained and quickly became one of the most valued lands on the Panamanian market due to the well preserved natural environment, landscaping design and modern public infrastructure. Many residential and commercial developments are taking place in this area offering a unique living and working experience at only 15 minutes drive from the cosmopolitan and vibrant Panama City.

Albrook, with an area of just over 200 hectares, was the closest US military base to Panama City and, due to its early reversal date, was one of the first meeting places between the two sides: the City and the Zone . It reverted to Panama on October 1, 1997, after 75 years of functioning as a base of the United States Air Force.

The original houses of Albrook have a rather austere aesthetic: one or two floors raised on stilts, tiled roofs with wide eaves, white walls and interiors painted uniformly of light beige. Most houses (86%) are semi-detached, the rest are isolated houses. There are still a few immaculate specimens, which constitute a control group that allows for objective comparisons.

Albrook offers its residents a beautiful environment for living surrounded by nature and many commercial facilities including Albrook Mall, the biggest shopping center in Central America, tens of restaurants, ample parks and green areas, Olympic size swimming pool, tennis courts, supermarkets, banks, movie theaters, gas stations, private schools, hotels, among others.

Amador Islands

Named after the Manuel Amador Guerrero, the first President of Panama, the 6km-long stretch of road extends into the Pacific Ocean at the point where the Panama Canal meets the sea. The newly renovated land bridge was built using soil excavated during the canal’s construction and today is popular with walkers and cyclists. It also boasts the capital’s best vantage points for watching the large container ships enter and exit the canal, and ferries regularly depart from the causeway for the Pearl Islands.

The extraordinarily scenic Amador Causeway stretches nearly three kilometers into the Pacific Ocean. This majestic causeway features many tourist-related venues and activities including hotels, restaurants, and exercise trails.

Today, the Amador Causeway is one of the city’s best known roads, home to some of Panama’s top activities and attractions showcasing the best of the isthmus, including the Biomuseo one of the city’s best museums. Designed by the Canadian-born American, Frank Gehry, the museum is housed within a colorful, origami-like building and celebrates Panama’s incredible biodiversity. After all, this small Central American country is home to more species of birds and animals (insects included) than the United States and Canada combined!
